| heal.abstract | This study is a review on the contribution of the socio-cultural approaches to Natural Sciences Education with the aim of achieving scientific literacy. It provides a critical view of the contemporary learning theories of Science Education extending from behaviourism to the modern socio-cultural perspectives. The importance is stressed on research based on Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), which puts emphasis mostly on developing interactive networks of activity systems. CHAT offers a new field of research to Natural Science Education towards scientific literacy. The study presents some critical views of scientific literacy in the modern science curricula and of the scientific content of Natural Sciences school textbooks. Moreover, a new mentality emerges in which science education is considered as part of the society. The research is based on the school textbook Environmental Study”, taught in the 1st class of primary school and provides an example of achieving scientific literacy in two primary school classrooms. | en |
