| heal.abstract | The relative cults which are to be found in Epirus, Magna Grecia and Sicily owe their origins at diverse reasons: Originally, at the Corinthian colonization, an event responsible for the dominance of Corinthian cults in the Corinthian colonies, then in the geographical areas of the above places and finally at political and social reasons, mainly in the religious policy of the Molossian Kings Alexander son of Neoptolemos and Pyrrhos. To the colonial cults belongs the worship of Apollo, founder god, who ,was revered from the archaic period with temples in most of the colonies like in Ambracia, Apollonia. Corcyra. Leucas and Syracuse. At the same time Artemis was worshipped, who is identified with the founding myth in the majority of the colonies. Similar worship was associated also with Heracles (Ant.Lib. IV, 1.25 and Diod. 5.4.2.). In Corinthian influence we attribute the cult of Athena, Aphrodite, Dionysos and Hestia. Nevertheless are not corroborated worshipping relationships at the cults of the principal Corinthian Deities like Hera and Demeter, Poseidon and Olympian Zeus. The single most important reasons that those Gods were not worshipped in Epirus it is that they were overshadowed by the cult of Dodonaean Zeus and Dione at Dodona and Persephone at the Nekyomanteion of Acheron. On the contrary, the Epirotic worship of Dodonaean Zeus was received favorably from the archaic period in Southern Italy, as it is demonstrated by the bronze statue of the last quarter of the 6th century B.C. which comes from the Messapic Ugento and represents the form of Dodonaean Zeus. Finally we must attribute to the religious policy of the Molossian Kings Alexander of Neoptolemos and Pyrrhos the reviving of the worship of Dodonaean Zeus and Dione in southern Italy and Sicily. The establishment of the cults of Hellanios Zeus at Syracuse and the reappearance of the cult of ancestral hero Heracles in Sicily. | el |
